Sustainable, Green Building, Subtropical, International connects rails

20081224

The first phase of Taiwan Green Building policy in "Green Building Promotion Program" has been driven with the outstanding results. Taiwan has implemented the excellent policy in Sustainable Building and has been approved and praised by the International Green Building Organizations in promoting Sustainable Development and Green Building.
In recent years, international organizations such as UNEP, iiSBE, WGBC and CIB has organized relevant international conferences, such as SB2002, SB2005, etc; In the activities, the promotion of Green Building concept, knowledge guidance and achievement is more effectively to further integration; In November 2007, A number of delegations from building industries, governments, academic institutes and research units attended WGBC Annual Congress in Chicago-United States which delivered three issues focused on “Taiwan Goes Green”, more specific in creating Taiwan competitiveness, domestic green building research, and step-by-step emerged the international level.
Presently, the first phase of “Green Building Promotion Program" is mainly controlled by the public-sector-based policies. The next phase will effectively encourage active participation from private industry in green building to continue the development of green building and expand to ecological community or ecological city. This project is developed in order to achieve the goal of sustainable country whether for international practice or for the implementation of eco-city towards green building program.
Therefore, the target of this two-year project is focus on sustainable and sequent operations to deal international interaction. This project will continue the achievement of Subtropical Green Building International Conference hold in 2007 and suit the schedule of SB2008. In 2009, the international conference ”Green Building and Toward Eco-City 2009” will be held in Taiwan. In this conference, each country’s representatives of building industries, governments, academic institutes and research units will be invited to share and exchange their experiences. At the same time, promote Green Building and Ecological Communities Development in Taiwan, encourage the research and development of private industry, and provide the examples for the sustainable environment education for Tropical countries.

Peitou Public Library - The First Green Library in Taiwan
The first green building in Taiwan, the architecture housing the Peitou Public Library has been awarded as the candidate for the Green Building’s Nine Indicators Certificate from Ministry of the Interior based on its outstanding sustainable design. Through the persistent effort of the design team, the library architecture integrated natural view and Peitou hot spring into the overall design. Its design also features the high and low windows in elevated mezzanine, allowing the circulation of 'floating air current,' which will keep the interior temperature down via the air exchanger. Other noteworthy characteristics include the deep balcony that will keep the sun sway; vertical wooden railings to absorb the heat wave and reduce the power usage; the light weight ecological roof powered by solar energy that will consume only 20% of the energy during a mid summer day.

Fu-bon Fu-An Memorial Building
The idea for the Memorial Building was that of a green design concept, preserving the existing environmental ecology, in conjunction with new plantings implemented creatively to entice butterflies and birds as a way to foster a sustainable environment. Available local materials and resources have also been incorporated so that the construction cost and demand for equipments can be significantly lowered. In order to reduce the consumption of natural resources and energy, equipment offering lower energy consumption, higher efficiency, automatic control, and alternative energies – solar power and rain water – serve as the primary standards in its selection.

Yilan Traditional Arts Center (Phase 4) –
Visitor Center and Dormitory for Artist and Trainee
The architecture design imitates traditional three-section compound, as a clever approach to reinvent the idea of green building by introducing traditional structure that is packed with various sustainable features. Well ventilation and lower energy consumption, to name just a few, are among the advantages of the traditional three-section compound. The design of Dong-Shan Villa seeks to preserve these qualities, and at the same time utilizes low-rise design surrounded by trees to evoke a sense of locality.

2006 Subtropical Green Building International Conference

20060723

Preface:
Taiwan is working hard on the relation between UNEP, iiSBE, WGBC, CIB, and other international organizations in order to extend and to update the knowledge of sustainable building in the hot-humid conditions. By organizing SB2002, SB2004, and SB2005 through the recent years, Taiwan is gradually improving on implementing the 9 green building indicators. As between countries, the international organization networks and conferences may be the important social platforms of exchanging knowledge and experience. Continuously, the Architecture and Building Research Institute (ABRI) of Ministry of the Interior is organizing the Subtropical Green Building International Conference this year in Taipei and Kaohsiung respectively. By following 9 green building indicators, the 2006 Subtropical Green Building International Conference is bringing up the issue of energy saving analysis to curtain wall performance, interior assessment and the development of nano-hyper liquid titan cleaning technology in the hot humid conditions, discussing with experts from Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong. Due to Taiwan has more than 800 green building existed, the government is constantly seeking for the better method to upgrade the subtropical green building standards and to update the information of the current green building development worldwide.
